10th grade graduation and relevant sailing experience

Primary job tasks

As a master (restricted) you are the captain of smaller- and medium sized vessels. You are the navigator of the ship and supervise the crew on an everyday basis. It is your job to fill out administration forms and you are responsible for the safety of the cargo or passengers and also the maintenance and repair of the machinery.

Your motivations and qualifications

You need a 10th grade final exam and maritime experience
Interest in a management position and navigating a ship
Good communication and teamwork skills

The programme

Your training as a master (restricted) takes 1,5 years, and the education is available at the nautical training institute, Marstal Navigationsskole on the island of Ærø, and at the school of maritime navigation, Skagen Skipperskole.

Your courses include navigation, meteorology, machinery, fire fighting, ship technology, environmental care etc.

Career opportunities

You can navigate small or medium size freighters and ferries. You can also work as first mate or second mate on large freighters.

When you sail internationally, you will be working for two months, but afterwards you will have two months off – both with full salary. If you want further education, you can study to become a master mariner.
